Martha J. Brown, Founder, MSW, NCG

Martha graduated from University of Chicago in 1976 with a Master’s in Gerontological Social Work (MSW). Her work history includes: Johnston R. Bowman Geriatric Rehab Hospital in Chicago from 1976 to 1979; Consultant for the Pan American Health Organization to the Mexican Government - Ministry of Health, 1979 to 1983; Director of the Foster Grandparent Program in El Paso, Texas from 1983 to 1987; and employment in a hospital based geriatric care management program in Albuquerque, New Mexico from 1987 to 1994. She is bilingual in Spanish and English.

The credentials above testify to her formal training. However, since young childhood, she grew up spending most weekends and holidays with elderly relatives, and volunteered throughout junior high and high school visiting elders in the county nursing home. She has always felt it a privilege to learn from and serve older people.

Martha received her credentials as a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) from the New Mexico Board of Social Work Examiners in 1990 and began her own geriatric care management business in 1994. It was originally called Senior Management and in 2000 became Geriatric Care Management. In 2005, Martha became a National Certified Guardian (NCG) with the National Guardianship Foundation (NGA). Since 2005, she has also served on the board of the Western Region Chapter of the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers (WRGCM). She was the Co-Chair of the 2007 Western Region Chapter Annual Conference of the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers (NAPGCM). In recognition of her “dedicated and devoted service to furthering the profession” she was awarded the “2007 Outstanding Chapter Member Award” by the NAPGCM.  She also co-chaired the 2010 Annual Conference of the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers, which was held in Albuquerque in April of 2010.

Martha has participated in several initiatives aimed at educating the community on the issues of aging. As part of this effort, she has conducted workshops and given presentations for professionals, families, and health care organizations as well as presented at local, national and international conferences.
